Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke commenced screening of players for the Golden Eaglets in Abuja on Thursday (today).
The team, coached by Manu Garba with
Amuneke as assistant, won the 2013 U-17 World Cup in the United Arab
Emirates, becoming the most successful side in the competition.
Team Administrator, Tayo Egbaiyelo, said
players would be called up in batches in order to create an enabling
environment for the coaches to select the best among them.
Amuneke said he had combed the entire country in the last one month to fish out raw talents.
The coaches will today assess the first batch of 35 players who arrived for camping on Wednesday.
More than 4,000 players took part in
similar exercise before the 2013 World Cup-winning team was assembled.
The NFF recently promoted Garba and Nduka Ugbade to the Under-20 team,
while leaving the duo of Amuneke and Emeka Amadi (goalkeepers’ trainer)
in charge of the Under-17 team.
The 2015 Under-17 African Championship
will hold in Niger. Golden Eaglets are already drawn bye into the second
round of the championship and will meet the winner of the first round
tie between Burundi and DR Congo with the first leg scheduled for July,
while the reverse fixture will be held in August.
