Photo; Latest craze — Bleaching injections and pills

There is a wide range of bleaching products or creams on the Ghanaian market bearing names such as skin toners, carrot light, anti-ageing, lightening bath gels and other steroid soaps.
Marketers of such products use enticing adverts featuring light skinned women, mostly celebrities, with the aim of attracting buyers. However, the latest and “result oriented” forms of bleaching agents are pills and injections which are taken and injected on the user to lighten the skin and give it a more “radiant” look. The World Health Organisation defines bleaching as the intentional alteration of one’s natural skin colour to one relatively if not substantially, lighter in colour, through the use of chemical skin lightening agents, either manufactured, homemade or the combination of the two.
Emergence of pills and injections An agent on the Spintex Road who spoke on condition of anonymity said the products, though popular in western cultures, are imported on the demand of the customer because of the cost and the different need, saying one could pay as much as GH¢ 3,000 for the pills and injections. She said though they are not advertised or promoted in the mass media, women, especially the young contact her for different pills, injections, as well as soaps and creams. A sample of the injection she showed to this reporter had the inscription; best whitening, anti ageing injection, no more dark spots, pimples, uneven tones, blemishes and stretch marks with a before and after look on the box showing the effect that could be achieved after using the product.
The pill had inscriptions which seeks to direct the customer to its usage, “take two capsules daily with water 10-15 minutes before meal (one in the morning and one at night). It added “see results within a week and for an effective whitening, use continuously for three months. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, do not take caffeine whiles taking the pills”. Reasons for using pills and injections Ghanaian women have ignorantly copied a lot of things from the western culture and unfortunately skin bleaching is one of such. Whiles some women do it to attract their male suitors, others bleach as a result of low self-esteem or the desire to be accepted within a particular class.
In an interview with Mrs Emma Yankey, a Cosmetologist at 2nd Image Hair and Beauty Clinic, she said these products, though not indicated on them, had a high amount of hydroquinone, lead and mercury chloride or ammoniated mercury which reduce and scrap off the melanin that produce the pigments in the skin. She said the quantity of these ingredients determined the time and effect a user could get. Mrs Yankey explained that some women were moving from creams and soaps to injections and pills as they easily diffused into the blood and gave a faster reaction as compared to the creams and soaps. “Once it is injected into the body, it enters the bloodstream then the blood circulates it all over the system. Most of the creams and soaps take many weeks or months to achieve results but the injections and pills act faster.
So you can inject today and in less than a week, you would start seeing some changes on your skin,” she explained. Toning or bleaching A lot of women under the cover of “toning” their skin use different bleaching agents, however, Mrs Yankey said toning and bleaching are two different beauty processes. “Toning is not lightening the skin;
it simply means firming your muscles through some form of exercises which is completely different from bleaching. Skin toning has nothing to do with the colour of the skin.” Mrs Yankey said skin bleaching, whether by pills or creams, have several short and long-term effects. She said the chemicals in the bleaching agents weakened the cebom (a natural skin protection and lubricant in the body) resulting in dehydration of the skin, wrinkles, fine lines and breaks the body’s ability to heal quickly. She said some people experienced severe headache and eye problems without knowing the cause, adding that excessive use of these products could result in cancer and loss of hair. She advised that anyone who had problems with the skin could see a cosmetologist or dermatologist for proper medication.

Federal High Court Discharged & Acquitted Fani Kayode of Money Laundering

Respite eventually came the way of former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode on Monday (Nov. 17, 2014) as a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, discharged and acquitted him of thirty-eight count charge of money laundering out of forty count charge filed against him by the anti graft agent EFCC, whilst the court ordered him to enter his defence in the remaining two counts.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, Rita Ofili Ajumogobia said in considering the issue of no case submission as filed by the defense counsel, certain laid down principles needed to be considered, such as the following. Has the prosecution led any evidence to link the accused person to the commission of the offense? Is the evidence adduced by the prosecution so credible to sway the court to compel the accused person to enter his defense and is the evidence so adduced make meaning and sense to any discerning minds?
Justice Ajumogobia, while appraising the submission of the prosecution and the defense said the prosecution has failed woefully to prove beyond reasonable doubt the offense in thirty-eight. Counts accordingly discharged and acquitted the former minister on this charges while the former minister was ordered to enter his defence in counts twenty-five and twenty-six.
The case has been adjourned till 8 December, when Chief Fani-Kayode is expected to open his defense on those two counts.
This is victory over political prosecution and injustice in the land, it is however important to say that there is hope for Nigeria, this is also an indication that our justice delivery system is perfectly working and devoid of bias and sentiments.
For Chief Femi Fani-Kayode I salute your courage, steadfastness and for the hope you have in God, the final arbiter. I have no doubt absolutely that you are coasting to victory. Congratulations Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.

APC Accuses PDP of Instigating Ekiti House Crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over a PDP-led and police-backed acts of impunity in Ekiti State, where only seven members of the 26-strong House of Assembly on Monday morning convened the House to carry out an agenda, dictated by Gov. Ayodele Fayose, that includes the impeachment of the Speaker.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said over 200 armed policemen are currently offering protection to the seven PDP members of the House, who convened purposely to impeach the Speaker, approve the list of Commissioners-designate as well as the Caretaker Committees for the local councils in the state.
”The issue of the Caretaker Committees, which Gov. Ayodele Fayose plans to swear in on Monday after the illegal approval by the House, is sub judice, hence the House cannot even discuss it not to talk of acting on it. Also, while the Governor was advised by the Clerk of the House that seven members out of 26 do not form a quorum, he said after all, only eight of 24 members in the Plateau House of Assembly impeached then Gov, Joshua Dariye in 2006!” it said.  APC said that ahead of what is clearly the height of impunity by a democratically-elected Government, the utility services in the official residence of the House Speaker, including electricity supply, have been cut off while his salaries and allowances have been stopped. Others acts of intimidation have been directed at the Speaker by the state authorities.
”We know that President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the leader of the PDP has elevated impunity to an art, but he has simply overreached himself with his party’s latest show of shame in Ekiti. The fact that the President’s body language supports impunity has emboldened officials elected under the banner of the PDP and appointed by his Administration to perpetrate acts of impunity with impunity.
”Over 200 policemen could not have been deployed for this illegal act in Ekiti without the knowledge of the Inspector General of Police. Yet, the same IG trampled the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by assuming the powers of the court to unilaterally withdraw the security detail of House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.  ”Can the IG claim not to be aware that his men are offering protection to only seven out of the 26 members of the Ekiti House of Assembly? Does he honestly believe it is part of the responsibility of the police, which is being funded by tax payers, to become the enforcement arm of the PDP? Does he believe that the police that is empowered to enforce the law should play a lead role in breaking it?” the party queried.
It warned the excitable and depthless Gov. Fayose of Ekiti not to throw the state into a needless crisis by his trademark tomfoolery. APC also warned that while a lot of unconstitutional and illegal activities have taken place under the PDP-led Federal Government, including the impeachment of then Gov Joshua Dariye of Plateau State by only eight out of 24 members of the State House of Assembly, any decision taken by only seven PDP members in the 26-member Ekiti House of Assembly will not stand.
The party called on the PDP and the Federal Government to stop instigating crisis in APC-controlled states, saying the PDP-instigated crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly has yet to subside before the anarchic ruling party decided to pounce on Ekiti.
”No matter how long it takes, those who are willfully flouting the laws of the land and engaging in anti-democratic actions will come to justice. Nothing in the world will justify the subversion of the Constitution by anyone, especially those who are democratically-elected. We are therefore warning the puppeteers in Ekiti to put a leash on their dogs of war, and not to set Ekiti state ablaze over their narrow interests,” it said.
