Gobe! Deeper Life Bible Church Pastor Sentenced To Six Years Imprisonment For Fraud

Ifeanyichukwu Eric Abakporo, a Pastor of the Deeper Life Bible Church, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by a federal court in New York.

The former Brooklyn-based civil attorney will be spending time in a United States prison in a case of defrauding banks, mortgage lenders, property owners, and property buyers.
Mr. Abakporo was sentenced on Wednesday, May 28 along with his co-defendant, Latanya Pierce, who received a lighter, 30-month sentence.
They were both found guilty of the federal charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and bank transfer fraud, involving at least two mortgage property lenders.
Abakporo will most likely be deported to Nigeria after he is done serving his sentence, with the likelihood of a three-year supervisory probation release waved.
The presiding judge in the federal case, US District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin immediately remanded the accused into custody.
His wife and two children wept openly in the courtroom as he was being taken away in handcuffs.
The legal fate of Abakporo and Pierce was never in doubt.  Both were convicted in 2013, in a wide-ranging series of illegal transactions in New York City defrauding banks, mortgage lenders, property owners, and property buyers over a nine-year stretch, dating back to 2003.

JUST IN: Boko Haram's Arms Suppliers Captured By Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has announced the captured of three people they believe are suppliers of arms for the dreaded Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.
According to reports, the suspects include a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, and a corporal, Abu Haruna, Solomon, arrested for illegal trafficking of arms and ammunition.

It was gathered that the suspects were captured in Nsukka by men of the Nigerian Army while they were travelling in a bus heading to the North from Imo State.
Some of the arms and ammunitions recovered from them include 40 AK47 magazines, 4 boxes of AK47 live ammunition, 100 pieces of live cartridges, one piece of Denin Mopol khaki and charms concealed in a cap.
The captured arms suppliers confessed their involvement in supplying of arms to insurgents in the Northern Nigeria.

A police corporal serving in Imo State Police Command was also involved in the arms running, according to a source.

The retired DSP, Abu Haruna, confessed that he had been in the business of arms dealing since he retired from the police.

He said their mission was to supply the ammunition to thier buyer in Taraba state.
The suspects were said to be taken to Nsukka Police Division before their transfer to the state CID.

Terrorism; Rocket launcher factory discovered in Kano

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), on Friday in Abuja, said a rocket launcher production facility had been uncovered at Dorayi District in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

A statement issued and signed by Major General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information disclosed what was described as a shocking discovery of the factory set up by the Boko Haram sect.

The statement said that a cordon and search exercise led to the discovery of the facility.

It explained that the discovery followed the arrest of a prominent member of the terrorist group.

“Locally made anti-aircraft gun and mortar accessories and rocket propelled grenade tubes and launcher along with accessories were recovered.

“Also seized were three AK47 rifles and hundreds of rounds of assorted ammunition as well as drilling machines and other fabricating equipment.

The statement reminded the public to report suspicious persons to security agencies in their localities to prevent unwholesome act by terrorists.

Meanwhile, the presidency during the week informed political leaders from the terror wracked North Eastern states that their activities against the security forces’ efforts at combating terrorism were being closely monitored.

At a meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) early this week, certain political officeholders including National Assembly members from Adamawa, Borno and Yobe were reportedly told in plain terms that government would not allow politicians to destroy the nation and its armed forces.

A source at the meeting informed Saturday Tribune that the northern leaders who were actually at the NSA’s office to protest the extension of emergency rule in those states “ got more than they bargained for as they were tongue-lashed and made to realise that every act of  sabotage against the security forces’ anti-terrorism effort including phone calls was not escaping the attention of  government.”

The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the state of emergency extension law in the three states for another six months.  The unanimous decision came after a week of protests and rejection of same  by legislators and  political elite in the affected states.

“You would observe that there was no objection to the extension when the Senate finally voted on the issue. That was a fallout of the meeting with the NSA who minced no words in telling these leaders that government would not mind withdrawing troops from the axis if the extension law would not be passed.

“When these protesting leaders and legislators from the north east zone confronted the National Security Adviser on the need for the suspension of the state of emergency, he told them point-blank that the decision was in their hands if they could persuade their people at home to agree with the proposal, but added that this would include withdrawal of all the troops from the affected states

“Dasuki told them to go and tell their traditional rulers, religious and youth leaders, including other citizens of the three states on their decision against emergency rule which should be widely publicised so that the troops can also be withdrawn since we are in a democracy where people endorse all propositions,” the source, who is close to one of the senators from the zone, told news men on Saturday .

A security source, who was also privy to the meeting,   that  “the NSA further warned that “the Nigerian military would not continue to tolerate dirty-politics with the security situation in the country. He particularly cited some politicians who engage in verbal attacks on troops through reckless and unfounded allegations and who sponsored inciting stories in the media and yet want military protection.

“He also told them that security agencies are closely monitoring activities of politicians and suspected local sympathisers of Boko Haram who are in the habit of misleading the troops for ulterior motives.

“Dasuki,  a  prince of Sokoto caliphate, the cradle of Islam in Nigeria, was so infuriated that he asked them whether they were more Northerner or believer than the rest of northern officers in the security agencies working day and night to quench the fire of Boko Haram which their political leaders created. He said rather than for them to be grateful for the concern of all Nigerians from the North and South towards addressing the security situations in their zone, some of these leaders and local people continued to provide misleading, diversionary information which had resulted in occasional ambushes where patriotic, gallant soldiers were killed,” the source added.

The source stated that it was at that meeting that it dawned on these politicians that they must not do anything to stop the extension of emergency rule in those states, hence the unanimous Senate decision of Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as part of immediate efforts at insulating soldiers from civilian influence on the anti-terrorism operations, it has also been learnt that soldiers had been withdrawn from non-essential services, including serving as military escorts to political office holders.

“It was discovered that some top politicians in the affected states who are in the habit of castigating the military had also at the same time been in the habit of requesting for military escorts rather than for operatives from other security services whenever they are traveling to their constituencies in the north east. This has been stopped because it is not part of the duties of soldiers to be escorts to politicians in a democracy,” a source in the military told news men on Friday.

Ugandan President faults Nigeria’s reliance on foreign help to rescue Chibok girls

President Yoweri Museveni  of Uganda has  faulted the involvement of foreigners in the effort to rescue the more than 200 school girls abducted by Boko Haram in Borno State.Museveni, a former guerrilla leader said it is inconceivable that he would seek foreign help to protect Ugandans.

He was addressing a rally of his party at Zirobwe Town Council grounds.

“I have never called the United Nations to guard your security. Me, Yoweri Museveni to say that I have failed to protect my people and I call in the UN….I would rather hang myself,” Museveni was quoted  as saying by the pro-government New Vision newspaper.

He added: “We prioritised national security by developing a strong army, otherwise our Uganda would be like DRC, South Sudan, Somalia or Nigeria where militias have disappeared with school children.

“It would be a vote of no confidence to our country and citizens if we can’t guarantee our security. What kind of persons would we be?” he asked amidst cheers from the crowd.

US Pulls out From Military Exercises in Thailand

The Pentagon has canceled ongoing military exercises with Thailand and an upcoming visit by a top Navy official as a result of the military coup in the Southeast Asian country.

"While we have enjoyed a long and productive military-to-military relationship with Thailand, our own democratic principles and U.S. law require us to reconsider U.S. military assistance and engagements," Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said Saturday.

About 700 U.S. troops were participating in the annual naval exercises, which include sailors, marines, ships and aircraft.

Kirby said the Pentagon was canceling the June visit of U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Harry Harris to Thailand and is withdrawing the invitation to the commander general of the Royal Thai Armed Forces to visit U.S. Pacific Command in June.

The U.S. urged Thailand's armed forces "to act in the best interests of their fellow citizens by ending this coup and restoring the rule of law and the freedoms assured those citizens through democratic principles," Kirby said.

The State Department said it scrubbed a U.S.-sponsored firearms training program in Thailand for the Royal Thai Police that was to begin Monday. Also canceled was a U.S.-sponsored study trip to the United States, scheduled for June, for some Royal Thai Police officers. The agenda included visits to FBI facilities and meetings with U.S. law enforcement officials.

On Saturday, a State Department official said the U.S. was increasingly concerned about actions of the Thailand military in the days since the coup.

"It has dissolved the Senate, detained a number of people, called in some academics and journalists, and continued to restrict the press," deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement. "We again call on the military to release those detained for political reasons, end restrictions on the media, and move to restore civilian rule and democracy through elections."

Breaking News: Gov. Shettima and Other Top Nigerian Politicians Escape Death

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state escaped death by the whiskers on a British Airways flight 082 that was struck by thunder while approaching Heathrow International Airport in London on Thursday, May 22. Some other top Nigerian political leaders like former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei were also aboard the plane. According to report, the plane left Abuja around 8am on Thursday and was billed to land at Heathrow airport at about 2.30pm, but the weather in Heathrow was so bad and the plane had to hover for about 40 minutes in the air without being able to land, before heading towards Birmingham airport to have an emergency landing as they were running short on fuel. The plane had already been hit by a lightning which caused a loud bang in the plane and damaged some electricals, one of the passengers aboard the flight revealed. A source revealed that Gov. Shettima and others were kept in the plane for about two hours during which the aircraft was refuelled and an attempt was made at fixing some engineering issues caused by the thunder. The passengers were later put on three luxury buses at about 6pm which took them by road to London when it became apparent that the plane couldn’t continue on the journey. They arrived London at about 10pm, and had to bear the brunt of looking for a place to pass the night as some of them couldn’t anywhere at that time. “The shock of the loud bang caused by the thunder and the several hours spent both in the air hovering and on the road left many of us weak and sick but our joy is that we survived what could have been a major disaster on the heels of the Boko Haram inflicted tragedies in Nigeria”, the source added.

A naked man playing violin in front of a downtown Portland courthouse Saturday refused to walk to a squad car and had to be carried by police.

Police say they aren't sure of the man's identity. He told them his name is Matthew T. Mglej and that he is 25 years old.

The brand of the violin was unknown on Saturday morning.

The man was jailed under the Portland city code forbidding indecent exposure.

Police say they warned the man numerous times about his "lack of attire," but he refused to dress himself or leave public view.

City police refrain from enforcing the code during Portland's World Naked Bike Ride as long as participants keep to the designated route. The event draws about 8,000 riders each June.

Iran Billionaire Executed Over $2.6B Fraud

A billionaire businessman at the heart of a $2.6 billion state bank scam, the largest fraud case since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, was executed Saturday, state television reported.

Authorities put Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death at Evin prison, just north of the capital, Tehran, the station reported. The report said the execution came after Iran's Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.

Khosravi's lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying that his client was put to death without any notice.

"I had not been informed about execution of my client," Riahi said. "All the assets of my client are at the disposal of the prosecutor's office."

State officials did not immediately comment on Riahi's claim.

The fraud involved using forged documents to get credit at one of Iran's top financial institutions, Bank Saderat, to purchase assets including state-owned companies like major steel producer Khuzestan Steel Co.

Khosravi's business empire included more than 35 companies from mineral water production to a football club and meat imports from Brazil. According to Iranian media reports, the bank fraud began in 2007.

A total of 39 defendants were convicted in the case. Four received death sentences, two got life sentences and the rest received sentences of up to 25 years in prison.

The trials raised questions about corruption at senior levels in Iran's tightly controlled economy during the administration of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mahmoud Reza Khavari, a former head of Bank Melli, another major Iranian bank, escaped to Canada in 2011 after he resigned over the case. He faces charges over the case in Iran and remains on the Islamic Republic's wanted list. Khavari previously admitted that his bank partially was involved in the fraud, but has maintained his innocence.

Dangote to establish sugar factory in Jigawa

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said on Thursday that the proposed sugar factory in Kaugama, Jigawa State, would provide 23,200 jobs in the state. Dangote said this while signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jigawa Government in Dutse. He said that 10,000 workers would be recruited to work at sugarcane farm, while 5,200 people would be recruited as factory workers, according to the News Agency of Nigeria He said that 8,000 people would be engaged as casual staff during farming seasons. According to him, the group will generate 60 megawatts of electricity to supply power to the company and other parts of the state. The chairman also said that the company would also establish hospital, primary and secondary schools for the staff and host community. Dangote said when the factory was established, it would attract small and medium enterprises to the state. He said he was ready to empower people in the northern part of the country through agriculture to fight poverty. The chairman said his company would compensate farmers, whose land had been earmarked for the company. Dangote urged the state government to provide land for the company to establish rice processing mill in the state The state Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, thanked the Dangote Group for investing in the state and expressed optimism that the people of the state would benefit from the investment. NAN reports that about 20,000 hectares of land had been acquired by the company for sugarcane production.

BREAKING NEWS: Police Foils Bomb Attack By Suspected Boko Haram Members In Abuja

Police in Kubwa, one of the most populated satellite towns in Abuja, Friday afternoon, foiled a bomb attack by suspected Boko Haram members as residents, market women scampered for safety.

A Golf car filled with gas cylinders and jerrycans was said to have been parked near ElRufai Bustop by Channel 8 Junction in Kubwa around 7 am Friday morning, Vanguard learnt

According to eye witnesses, many residents and passersby took to their heels upon noticing the car which they suspected could have been parked to bomb the area.

Eventually the area was cordoned off by the police anti-bomb squad after the police were invited by the chief Imam of Kubwa Central mosque Sheikh Abdulmumini Ahmad Khalid and other residents Imam of  the most densely populated areas of Kubwa.
