Liberia's President Declares Ebola Emergency

Liberia's president has declared a state of emergency in the West African nation amid an Ebola outbreak that shows no signs of slowing.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made the announcement on national television late Wednesday, saying that some civil rights may have to be suspended as a result of the crisis.
Observers say the crisis in Liberia has deepened because many people are choosing to keep their ill relatives at home instead of bringing them to isolation centers.
The disease that has killed at least 282 people in Liberia alone is spread through contact with the bodily fluids of Ebola patients showing symptoms.
In her speech, Sirleaf said that "ignorance and poverty, as well as entrenched religious and cultural practices, continue to exacerbate the spread of the disease."

FIFA Bans Former Greece Coach Santos for 8 Matches

FIFA banned former Greece coach Fernando Santos for eight international games on Monday for verbally abusing match officials at the World Cup.
Santos was banished from the dugout after extra time of Greece's second-round match against Costa Rica, which finished 1-1. His team then lost the penalty shootout.
Santos displayed "several acts of unsporting conduct toward the match officials," FIFA said Monday in a statement.
FIFA said Santos must the serve the ban in official competitive matches played by the next national team he coaches.
The sanction likely ends the Portuguese coach's top-level international career, though he can appeal. His Greece contract expired after the World Cup in Brazil.
FIFA said its disciplinary committee also suspended Italy medical official Aldo Esposito for six matches.
Esposito was sent from the dugout for unsporting conduct during Italy's 1-0 loss against Uruguay. That group-stage match was made infamous by Luis Suarez biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.
In a roundup of World Cup disciplinary cases Monday, FIFA noted that Suarez has eight competitive Uruguay matches left on his nine-match ban. FIFA also banned him from all football for four months.
However, the new Barcelona recruit has appealed all sanctions to the Court of Arbitration of Sport which expects to give a verdict later this month.
FIFA's disciplinary panel also ruled on suspensions for red-card offenses from the World Cup, which must be served in teams' next official competition matches.
Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who was sent off against Uruguay, will miss Italy's opening 2016 European Championship qualifier in Norway on Sept. 9.
Croatia, which plays in the same qualifying group as Italy, will be without Ante Rebic at home to Malta on the same date. Rebic was sent off in a 3-1 loss against Mexico.
Antonio Valencia will miss Ecuador's first match at the Copa America in Chile next June. The Manchester United winger was dismissed in a 0-0 draw against France.
Cameroon's Alex Song will serve the rest of his three-match ban during African Cup of Nations qualifiers in September against Congo and Ivory Coast. Song was sent off in Cameroon's 4-0 loss against Croatia and was suspended for his team's 4-1 loss against Brazil.

Ebola virus infection detected in Ogun State workers tested positive!

Palpable fear has gripped residents of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, following news that two suspected Ebola virus disease (EVD) victims had been detected in the state.
This came barely 11 days after a Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, died in a private hospital in Lagos and his remains were later cremated in the state.
Speaking during a radio programme monitored in Abeokuta, at the weekend, the state Acting Epidemiologist, Dr. Yusuph Akeem, confirmed that two suspected victims were on surveillance in the state.
According to him, the state Ministry of Health was already in possession of the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the suspected victims.
He also stated that the victims resided in the state but worked in Lagos State.
The state Director of Public Health, Dr. Yusuph Qudus, has revealed that the health officials in the state had been holding series of meetings with their counterparts in Lagos and at the federal level to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
In a related development, Federal and Lagos State health officials have visited the General Overseer of The Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the country.
The delegation, led by Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, offered to work with the health team of the church in the areas of technical assistance, medical advice and training to ensure that no victim of the deadly disease resorted to the church from any of the affected countries undetected in search of cure.
The commissioner said the delegation decided to pay the visit to the church because of the recognition that it was an international Christian centre, which congregation comprised people from all over the world, including countries of the West African sub-Region already affected by the Ebola disease.
Idris said the visit was one of government’s strategies of sensitising faith-based organisations on the need to cooperate with the government to prevent the spread of the disease in the country by educating their members.
He explained that the Federal and the Lagos State government were working hard on how to prevent the spread of the virus to the country.
He said: “We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here, because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease.”
Also speaking, the Director, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, said the visit was to inform The Synagogue leader of the deadly nature of the Ebola virus and to ensure it did not spread in the country.
Responding, Prophet Joshua promised to work with the government to ensure that the disease did not spread to the country.
The clergyman, revered for his healing powers, said he would put some measures in place to ensure that people from the already affected countries did not enter Nigeria. One of such measures, he said, was to visit any of the countries when necessary rather than allowing their residents come into Nigeria.
He also promised to suspend some of his major healing programmes for a few weeks, adding, “I am ready to work with you. I love my country and I will be ready to work with you. Even if it is a rumour, there is need to secure our environment to ensure that it is safe.”

Fingertip Bitten off at Beyonce-Jay Z Concert

Authorities say a man was arrested at Jay-Z and Beyonce's Rose Bowl concert in Southern California after allegedly groping a woman and then biting off the tip of her boyfriend's finger during a fight.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports 25-year-old Roberto Alcaraz-Garnica of San Diego was taken into custody Saturday on suspicion of sexual battery and mayhem.
Pasadena police Lt. John Luna says Alcaraz-Garnica was accused of groping a woman in her 20s. When the woman's boyfriend confronted him, a fight broke out. Luna says during the altercation the suspect bit off the tip of one of the boyfriend's fingers.
Alcaraz-Garnica was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. It isn't known if he has a lawyer.
Police say 10 other people were arrested during Saturday's concert, which drew about 55,000 fans.
